Dhaka University, Nov 21 (bdnews24.com) – Almost 10 percent of the population are internal migrants, the ratio more than quadrupling over the past six decades, a Dhaka University professor said Saturday.

"Internal migration occurs in 9.6 percent of the population," Prof AKM Nurunnabi of the population sciences department said, presenting a keynote paper at a Dhaka University seminar.

It was just er cent in 1950, he said.

The present migration figure is around 13.1 million out of a total population of over 150 million, he said.

Unemployment, economic challenges, and environmental factors are the main causes of internal migration in Bangladesh.

Dhaka University vice chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, who spoke among others, said internal migration in turn causes demographic and social problems.

He stressed multifaceted steps to solve these and change people's "social perspective".

Population sciences chairman Mohammad Mehedi Hasan Khan presided over the seminar.
