AL launches victory celebrations

Dhaka, Dec 1 (bdnews24.com)--The Awami League launched a month-long programme on Tuesday ahead of the Victory Day on Dec 16.

The programmes began with acting president Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury leading the ruling party activists in placing floral wreaths at the portrait of founder 'Bangabandhu' Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi.

Wreaths were also laid at the "Eternal Flame" at Suhrawardy Udyan and at the Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard at Mirpur.

The party will hold daylong programmes on Dec 14, the Martyred Intellectuals' Day, and on the Victory Day. A discussion meeting will be held on Dec 17.

Associate organisations will also take up programmes from Dec 12 to 17. The month long celebrations will end on Dec 31 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and the national committee on implementation of the demands of freedom fighters and celebration of freedom fighters' day also placed floral wreaths at the same places. The national committee observed Tuesday as the "Freedom Fighters' Day".

After a nine-month bloody war, Bangladesh broke away from Pakistan to become an an independent nation on Dec 16, 1971.
