The number of voters in Chattogram has increased ahead of the 13th parliamentary election, but the number of polling centres in the city and surrounding areas has fallen compared with the previous election.
According to the latest voter list published by the Election Commission on Sunday, Chattogram’s 16 constituencies now have a total of 6.68 million registered voters, around 100,000 more than at the last parliamentary election.
Despite the rise in voters, the total number of polling centres has dropped by 58, from 2,023 in the previous election to 1,965 this time.
Among the registered voters in Chattogram, about 3.48 million are men and just under 3.2 million are women. There are also 69 registered transgender voters.
Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain, additional regional election officer in Chattogram, said the previous election used electronic voting machines (EVMs), which required a larger number of polling centres.
This time, it will be conducted using paper ballots.
“More centres are needed when EVMs are used for voting. Since voting will be done using paper ballots, the number of centres has naturally decreased.”
